The day before yesterday saw the start of the plan for the progressive easing of all the most impactful worksites on the Ligurian motorway network, in view of the Easter holidays and the spring long weekends of 25 April and 1 May, as well as 2 June. In particular, on the sections under Autostrade per l'Italia's responsibility, from 16 April it was decided to stop all work, with the guarantee of at least two lanes open in each direction (A10 and A26), also taking into account the influx of visitors to Genoa, on the occasion of Euroflora 2025 (which will be held in the area of the former Fiera di Genova from 24 April to 4 May).

The agreement was finalised after a meeting between the leaders of the Liguria Region, representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Anci, the Municipality of Genoa, Anas, and the three concessionaire companies for the relevant sections: Aspi, Autostrada dei Fiori, and Concessioni del Tirreno (the last two are owned by the Astm group, which belongs to the Gavio family).

The agreement, as far as Aspi is concerned, envisages, among other things, the definitive removal of the permanent carriageway exchange between Lavagna and Sestri Levante (Santa Giulia, Sant'Anna, Del Fico, San Bernardo and Valle Ragone viaducts).

The Recco Exception

.

So, last Wednesday was the day of the work-site stop, thanks to which users can now travel on all sections, using at least two lanes in each direction; but even with the resumption of work on 6 May, Aspi has ensured that work will stop on all weekends, from Friday at 2pm to Monday morning at 12pm, with a further work-site dismantling phase from 29 May to 3 June.

Until 17 May, however, the exception is the construction site between Recco and Genova Nervi, which will remain active on weekends, but with a device to guarantee two lanes in the prevailing traffic direction.

Midweek lane reductions are planned especially on the A12 (between Chiavari and Rapallo in both directions; between Recco and Genova Nervi towards Genova; between Lavagna and Sestri Levante towards Livorno until 30 June) and on the A7 (between Bolzaneto and Busalla). Then, there will be another work stoppage from 29 May to 3 June, to allow at least two lanes in each direction on all sections over the weekend of the 2 June holiday.

Clearance of bottlenecks

.

On the A10, Savona - Ventimiglia, the Concessioni del Tirreno company has, since last Wednesday, eliminated all one-carriageway bottlenecks; this status will last until 10 p.m. on Sunday, 4 May. A similar measure will also be implemented on the A12, in the Sestri Levante-Livorno section, where the concessionaire has also opened, since yesterday, the interconnection ramp between the A15 Parma-La Spezia and the A12, in the direction of Livorno, to two vehicle currents (albeit temporary).

Finally, on the A6 Turin-Savona motorway, the Autostrada dei Fiori concessionaire has reactivated the system that allows dynamic lane management during peak traffic periods, i.e. two vehicle currents in the direction of the prevailing traffic, at the Cento viaduct, between the Mondovì and Niella Tanaro junctions. Since last Wednesday afternoon, dynamic lane management has been adopted on all spring and summer weekends, including on the construction sites located on the section between Altare and Savona.

The Region on the Front Line

.

According to the President of the Liguria Region, Marco Bucci, during holiday periods the two lanes in each direction "are indispensable and must be guaranteed at all times, even in the event of emergencies, so an ad hoc plan must be drawn up to speed up the capacity for intervention as much as possible. The spring period is, in fact, crucial for Liguria, in particular for the tourist-receptive sector and for the allied industries that this generates in our territory: we cannot afford strongly impacting inconveniences".

Complex Square

.

On the other hand, the picture on the A10, from Savona to the French border, is still complex; on this, Bucci pointed out, "I have urged the concessionaire to find solutions to speed up work as much as possible: an extra effort is needed to mitigate the impact of the construction sites.

For his part, the councillor for infrastructure and roads, Giacomo Giampedrone, stressed that he considered "the plan to lighten the Ligurian sections during the spring bridges to be positive. The commitment of all those involved at the table convened periodically is to try to constantly improve the overall picture, even in the complexity of the necessary interventions, established in the direct relationship between Mit and concessionary companies. Certainly it is a positive novelty to bring forward by one month the stop of construction sites, on all weekends, starting in May, on the Aspi routes: a pre-summer arrangement that, in past years, started in June. The plans, moreover, concern daytime work: at our request, the concessionaires have also undertaken to suspend the night-time closures, during the periods of worksite easing linked to the upcoming holidays".

The closure of the construction sites, at least during the holidays, was highly anticipated by the people of Liguria, who, since 2018, the year in which the Morandi bridge collapsed, have been suffering from a motorway network in perpetual maintenance, with continuous changes of lanes and carriageways; a situation that has also contributed to causing serious accidents, some of them fatal.
