Continental at Milan Design Week: an experience dedicated to urban silence
At Base Milano, the installation 'The Sound of Premium' tells how tyre technology can reduce noise in our cities.

On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2026, Continental has decided to tackle an often underestimated but very important issue for people living in the city: noise pollution. At the BASE Milano spaces in via Bergognone 34, the company is presenting 'The Sound of Premium', a sensory journey that allows visitors to reflect on how sound influences our daily well-being.
The installation has been conceived as a journey divided into three phases: starting with the chaotic noise typical of city traffic, moving through a phase of harmony, and finally arriving at total stillness. The idea behind this project is that a silent city is not 'empty', but rather the result of engineering work to eliminate unnecessary noise.
Indeed, with the rise of electric cars, engine noise is disappearing, making the noise caused by tyres rolling on the asphalt much more noticeable. This is precisely where technological research comes in.
In the exhibition space, Continental shows how tyre design is not just a question of aesthetics, but above all a question of functionality. Solutions such as ContiSilent and Silent Pattern are presented, technologies specially developed to reduce the noise disturbance generated by the contact between the tyre and the road.
A tyre from the Continental range is on display in the installation, allowing the complexity of the tread to be seen at close quarters. This element is crucial: it is the point of contact with the asphalt where it is decided how much noise the moving car will produce.
