The Carabinieri of the Ros seized around EUR 80,000 in cash from former Regional President Salvatore Cuffaro, who is under investigation, along with 17 other people including former minister Saverio Romano, for criminal conspiracy, obstructing public tenders, and corruption. The money was found during searches ordered by the Palermo Public Prosecutor's Office. Part of it was kept in some safes in Cuffaro's Palermo home, part hidden in his estate in San Michele di Ganzaria, in the Catania area.
The Hiding Places of the Banknotes
In a safe hidden in a bookcase in the study of the ex-governor's house in Palermo there were 7500 euro in deteriorated banknotes, 200 kept in a yellow envelope; 8800 euro in 50 banknotes; 4140 in 20 banknotes and 2300 in 50 banknotes. In a second safe there were 5000 euro in 100 banknotes; 5150 also in 100 banknotes; 650 wrapped in transport documents of the farm in the name of his wife Giacoma Chiarelli and 2065 wrapped in sheets of paper. In an armoured cabinet in the bedroom there were instead 2200 euro. The rest of the money was instead hidden in a piece of furniture on the estate in San Michele di Ganzaria.
