Cottarelli: ‘Me, a candidate for mayor of Milan? If they ask me, I’ll think about it’

“Me, a candidate for mayor of Milan? Nobody’s asked me, but if they did ask me I’d think about it, but at the moment it seems unlikely to me.” This was stated by the economist Carlo Cottarelli on the sidelines of the launch of the Europeisti.eu movement in Milan. “In Milan, the issues are security, traffic, air quality, and the housing problem, which is a fundamental issue,” he added. “I would like to have a mayor who governs his city well, not one who gets involved in national politics.”
When asked about the possibility of Pierfrancesco Majorino standing as the centre-left candidate, Cottarelli says: ‘He’s left-wing enough, he’s the right candidate, but I don’t agree with the ideas of the current PD led by Elly Schlein, of which Majorino is a part; they’re too left-wing. I’m a centrist, a liberal democrat,’ he concludes.
