CPI: Italia and seven other countries express support for the Court, ‘regret over US sanctions’
Let us defend a rules-based international system
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - "We, the States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), reaffirm our continued and unwavering support for the independence, impartiality and integrity of the ICC. As staunch supporters of the International Criminal Court (ICC), we express our regret and our firm opposition to the announcement of the sanctions that the United States intends to impose on the Court”. This is stated in a joint declaration by the foreign ministers of Italia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Japan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. “We note with satisfaction the work carried out by the Court to prepare for the adoption of these measures, so that it may continue to fulfil its mandate under the Rome Statute, and we reaffirm our unconditional support to ensure that the Court can do so. However – the statement adds – should these sanctions be imposed, they would have a significant impact on the Court’s work, on its staff and on their families, who work every day to bring to justice those responsible for the most serious international crimes and to support their victims. We remain united in our support for the International Criminal Court and determined to pursue a constructive and inclusive dialogue with States not party to the Rome Statute, ahead of the Assembly of States Parties to be held in December 2026. We will continue to work together to support the Court’s important work, defend the rules-based international system and promote accountability.”
