Crans-Montana: aid of CHF 10,000 for the families of the victims
The Valais State Council approved emergency aid for the injured and the families of the victims
The first compensation has arrived for the New Year's Eve tragedy in Crans-Montana, in which six Italians also lost their lives. The Valais Council of State today approved emergency aid for the families of the victims of the local "Le Constellation".
According to reports on Swiss Radio and Television, this would be compensation of Fr. 10,000, equivalent to about EUR 11,000. A lump sum will be paid to each injured person and to the families of the 41 dead.
In addition to this, at the request of the population, an independent fund will be created to collect and manage donations from private individuals in a specially opened account. In addition, the cantonal authorities have decided that in future, pyrotechnic devices will be banned inside all facilities intended for the public. This measure is intended to prevent further tragedies after the New Year's Eve disaster that shook public opinion.
The Valais cantonal government also made it clear that the funds allocated for the injured and their relatives 'will not under any circumstances be used to cover the costs resulting from the fire, which would be charged to the State of Valais'. At the federal level, the authorities also decided today that the Confederation will also have to participate in supporting the victims' families. In a note, the Swiss Federal Council pledged to ensure that those affected by the tragedy receive adequate help. To guarantee this commitment, the Council explained that it will request funding from Parliament.
There will also be a further investigation into the compensation provided to families, with the Federal Department of Justice and Police (Dfgp) called upon to examine 'by the end of February whether there are any gaps in the current provision of care services and how the federal government can provide assistance. The federal government's contributions would be supplementary and would complement the support provided by insurance companies and the Valais authorities,' the Council concluded in the note.
