Friday commemoration in Switzerland with Macron and Mattarella
Milan grief-stricken for the death of Chiara Costanzo and Achille Barosi, the two young victims of the tragedy that occurred on New Year's Eve in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, where a fire at the Le Constellation bar killed 40 people. As a sign of condolence and participation in the mourning of the families, the mayor Giuseppe Sala proclaimed city mourning for today, the day on which the funeral will be held.
Clara and Achille's funeral
The funerals of the two young people will both take place in the afternoon, at 2.45pm, in two of the city's iconic basilicas. Chiara Costanzo's funeral ceremony will take place in the basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, while Achille Barosi's will be held in the basilica of Sant'Ambrogio. The city, friends and institutions will thus be able to participate in a choral manner in the final farewell. At first, Achille's funeral had been set for 11 a.m. in Sant'Ambrogio, while Chiara's funeral was planned for the afternoon. Later the decision was made to celebrate the funeral at the same time.
The return of the bodies
Meanwhile, after returning to Italy aboard an Air Force C-130, the bodies were received in Milan, where the funeral chambers were set up. For Chiara, the tribute was organised in the chapel of the Collegio San Carlo, a place of meditation for schoolmates, teachers and friends. Achille's funeral chamber was instead set up in the basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, where the funeral will take place today. The city mourning proclaimed by the Municipality includes flags at half-mast on public buildings and an invitation to sobriety during institutional initiatives, as a tangible sign of Milan's participation in a tragedy that has struck the entire community.
The commemoration at Moreschi High School
A further moment of meditation is planned for Thursday 9 January at the Moreschi High School, attended by Chiara Costanzo, which has organised a commemoration open to the entire school community. At 9 a.m. all classes will follow the initiative from their classrooms via Meet connection with the Aula Magna, where 3AL, school headmaster Bruno Rossilli, teachers, presidential staff, the Dsga, Chiara's friends, external guests and, if they wish, also family members will be present.
The ceremony will open with a greeting from the headmaster, followed by speeches from students, with priority given to classmates and close friends, and testimonies from teachers and guests who knew Chiara. The memorial moment will be accompanied by instrumental music performed by the students. At 10.30 a.m. there will be a minute's collective silence in the institute courtyard. Following this, representatives of each class will launch white balloons from the centre of the football pitch, in a symbolic gesture of remembrance and sharing. It will also be possible, for those who have not yet done so, to lay flowers at the foot of the frame dedicated to Chiara.
