Two panels of the Trento 2025 Festival of Economics will be dedicated to crypto-activities in the financial sphere and cryptocurrencies in particular. The topic divides Europe and the United States: on the one hand, in the Old Continent, the regulation on crypto-assets markets establishes a single harmonised regulatory framework applicable to crypto-assets, both for issuers and service providers. The EU Council approved the regulation on 16 May 2023. Last March, Consob and Banca d'Italia addressed listed companies, giving guidance on how to account for cryptoassets in the financial statements, on transparency standards towards the financial market, and on the checks to be performed by auditors. In a joint communication to companies listed or traded on multilateral platforms, Consob and Banca d'Italia, while not introducing any obligations, highlighted the importance of providing information in the financial statements that is useful for understanding the effects of cryptocurrencies on the balance sheet and income statement, in light of the exposure and risk associated with the positions held.

In the United States, on the other hand, the Trump administration immediately set itself up as a champion of crypto: the president even signed an executive order establishing a 'strategic reserve of Bitcoin', as well as coining and putting its own memecoin on the market. These topics will also be discussed at the Trento Festival of Economics, from 22 to 25 May. The president of Consob, Paolo Savona, will speak about cryptocurrency on 23 May in a conversation with the professor of the Sapienza University of Rome Marina Brogi. Then, on 25 May, Alessandra Perrazzelli, lecturer at the Politecnico di Milano (and former deputy director general of the Bank of Italy), will outline the American turning point on cryptoassets, together with Stefano Caselli (dean SDA Bocconi school of management).
