Cuba, Coast Guard kills 4 people on speedboat from US. Havana: 'They were terrorists'
A speedboat with Florida plates violated Cuban waters and opened fire, causing a clash with the Coast Guard, which responded with deaths and injuries
The Cuban Coast Guard killed four people and injured six others who were travelling on board a speedboat with Florida plates following a firefight in Cuban territorial waters. This was announced by the Interior Ministry in Havana.
"In the early hours of the morning," it explained in a note, "a speedboat was detected violating Cuban territorial waters with Florida plates that approached about one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino canal, in Cayo Falcones, in the province of Villa Clara."
When a Coast Guard unit 'approached for identification, fire was opened from the speedboat at the servicemen, causing the commander of the Cuban boat to be wounded. As a result of the confrontation, the four attackers were killed and six were wounded, and received medical assistance,' the ministry stressed.
Havana: on boat 10 Cubans living in US for terrorist purposes
Subsequently, the Cuban government stated that the 10 passengers of the boat that opened fire on its soldiers were armed Cubans living in the United States who were trying to infiltrate the island and unleash terrorism.
The announcement came just hours after Cuba said its soldiers had killed four people and wounded six others aboard a Florida-registered speedboat that had entered Cuban waters and opened fire on the soldiers, wounding a Cuban officer. The Cuban government said that most of the 10 people on board the boat 'had a history of criminal and violent activity'.
