Bank of Italy survey
This is what emerges from the survey by the Banca d'Italia, which emphasises that 'for traditional accounts, there has been a decrease in basic fees and debit card issuing fees, while the average commissions applied on transactions have increased.
Online current accounts
The costs of online bank accounts increased in 2024: 'Unit prices for services decreased, while operating costs increased. The average management fee has increased by EUR 1.7, to EUR 30.6'.
For postal accounts, both unit fees and operating charges increased. The average operating expense rose from EUR 67.3 to EUR 71.6. The weighted average expense for the three types of current account stood at €85.3, down €2.5 from the previous year; the decrease reflects the increased weight of online accounts, reflecting the growing popularity of this type of account among customers. This effect more than offset the simultaneous increase in prices (+€1.0) and operations (+€0.1). The commission for making funds available (MDF) applied in current account credit opening contracts remained more or less stable at 1.6 per cent of the credit granted; the unitary fast-tracking commission applied on overdrafts and overdrafts increased from €13.7 to €16.2.
"+23% in ten years"
According to Codacons, the cost of managing a current account has grown in 10 years by +23%, with increases in the cost of Atm withdrawals that have caused the variable expenses linked to account management to soar. In 2014, according to data from Bankitalia itself, the cost of managing an account stood at 82.2 euro.
