Cycling, the Giro di Sardegna returns after 15 years
The event recalls cycling legends and aims to boost tourism and economic development in Sardinia
The wait is over. After 15 years, the Giro di Sardegna, an international cycling event, is back. The historic stage race will take place over five days, from 25 February to 1 March 2026.
The Giro di Sardegna is considered one of the most prestigious chapters in Italian cycling.
Manifestation started in 1958
Born in 1958, after the first professional experiences on the island as early as the late 1940s, the race quickly established itself as an international event at the start of the season, attracting the best teams and some of the greatest champions ever. It is certainly no coincidence that legendary names such as Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Vittorio Adorni, Marino Basso, Giuseppe Saronni and Peter Sagan appear in the roll of honour, confirming the sporting and symbolic value of the event. After a history marked by successes, interruptions and attempts at revival, 2026 marks a new phase, in the wake of tradition, but with a modern vision, capable of uniting sport, territory and international promotion. The event is organised by the Regional Tourism Department and the Professional Cycling League, in collaboration with Sport and Health Spa.
Returning after 15 years
"The return of the Giro di Sardegna to the Island after fifteen years represents a result of great sporting, symbolic and strategic value for our Region," said President Todde, during the presentation of the sporting event. "Bringing back to our territory a historic competition of international cycling, a sport that fascinates millions of people around the world, means investing in a vision that combines sport, promotion of the territory and economic development, enhancing Sardinia as a destination capable of attracting major events. The sports organisation will be entrusted to GS Emilia, already a leading player on the international scene with major events such as the Giro dell'Emilia, the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali and the Marco Pantani Memorial, a guarantee of organisational and technical quality.
Tourist Development
There is a tourism aspect to it, as Regional Tourism Councillor Franco Cuccureddu emphasises 'because we believe it can be functional in the pursuit of the strategic objectives of attracting low-season flows and promoting different tourism products'.
