D'Amico orders two new tankers for USD 90 million
Delivery is scheduled for March and June 2029. These are eco units, capable of consuming 4 tonnes less fuel per day
D'Amico international shipping (Dis), a shipping company specialising in the tanker market, through its operating subsidiary d'Amico tankers, has signed a construction contract with the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding, for the purchase of two new medium range 2 (mr 2, i.e. 50,000 dwt) tankers at a price of $45.4m each, for a total of $90.8m. These two new ships are scheduled to be delivered to d'Amico tankers in March and June 2029, respectively. The company also has an option, exercisable within two months of signing the construction contract, to order two more ships of the same type.
Currently, the Dis fleet comprises 29 double-hull tankers (mr 1 and 2, handysize and lr 1, of which 27 owned and two bare-hull chartered vessels), with an average age of 9.6 years. "These new mr 2s," explains Carlos Balestra di Mottola, managing director of d'Amico international shipping, "will be among the most efficient in their class, consuming, at design draught and normal continuous power output of the main engine, around 4 tonnes of fuel oil per day less (equivalent to a reduction of around 17%) than our already efficient mr 2 eco-design vessels currently in service.
The new medium range 2s, he adds, 'will also be methanol-ready, certified for the use of biofuels, and equipped with cyber-resilient solutions'. The aim, he concludes, is to operate with 'a modern and fuel-efficient fleet in order to reduce our environmental impact and, at the same time, meet the changing and increasingly stringent requirements of charterers and regulatory authorities'.
