Satellites in orbit, producers of data. And the provision of value-added services, using the asset of information. The union of these two segments of the aerospace supply chain is the basis for the integration of D-Orbit and Planetek, resulting in a new company with 500 employees and 45 million revenue.

On one side is the Como-based company D-Orbit, founded in 2011, a leader in space logistics and orbital transport; on the other is the Bari-based Planetek Group, a company engaged in the Earth observation, geospatial analysis and mission software business. With this transaction, D-Orbit acquires 100% of Planetek's shares, making Planetek's shareholders part of D-Orbit's shareholder base. The current company organisation will remain unchanged to ensure continuity of operations.

The two companies have already collaborated on several initiatives in the past, the most recent of which was the first mission of AI-eXpress, an innovative technology that leverages AI and blockchain technology to improve the responsiveness of satellites and enable low-latency analysis. The adoption of AI in orbit allows satellites to make autonomous decisions, such as identifying useful data or adjusting operations in real time, avoiding waiting for instructions from Earth. At the same time, blockchain ensures that collected information is stored and shared securely, making space data more reliable and accessible.

The idea, drawing on Planetek's experience in the field of Earth observation, is to strengthen D-Orbit's ability to develop and deploy solutions for data processing and analysis directly in space, rather than relying solely on terrestrial infrastructure, by redefining the way satellite data is collected, managed and delivered in near real time.

'We have been working on this milestone for a long time,' explains D-Orbit CEO Luca Rossettini, 'and by combining our strengths we not only expand our technological reach but also strengthen our commitment to making space more accessible and sustainable to improve life on Earth. Our shared values, centred on putting people first, are at the heart of this collaboration, ensuring that innovation is driven by a strong, people-centred culture that values talent and promotes long-term success'.

'Together,' adds Giovanni Sylos Labini, CEO of Planetek Italia, 'the two companies aim to redefine the way space information is accessed, analysed and used to solve global challenges, from environmental monitoring and urban planning to national security and disaster response.

'The consolidation of the space industry and service-oriented competencies,' adds D-Orbit President Simonetta Di Pippo, 'is now more crucial than ever. The union between D-Orbit and Planetek represents a decisive step in this direction. Together, we will offer our customers a single point of reference for support services, in-orbit servicing and big data management in space, while introducing a new collaboration model. An evolution that will generate value for all our stakeholders'.

Founded in 2011, D-Orbit has developed a system for transporting satellites in space (it has already completed 17 missions, with 114 satellites placed), making their placement in the required orbits more targeted and faster. It recently closed a 150 million euro financing round, the largest in Italy for the sector, and has also obtained a 120 million euro maxi-contract from the ESA to build a vehicle capable of docking a satellite in orbit and moving it elsewhere, in order to extend its useful life or, on the contrary, to carry out its final safe decommissioning.
