Daniele Compatangelo, the La7 journalist and Washington correspondent, has died. He had been in the political spotlight following his recent telephone interview with Donald Trump, which sparked a row with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after his report on ‘L’aria che tira’.
He died suddenly after falling ill, his mother has confirmed to ANSA.
Born in Savona and raised in Turin, he had lived in Rome but had been based in the United States for many years. He had a 25-year career behind him, during which he had worked with numerous publications, from Sky to *Il Secolo XIX*, and managed high-profile press offices.
In particular, he had covered no fewer than eight editions of the Olympic Games, from Sydney 2000 to London 2012. In June 2011, his investigative documentary *The Los Angeles Breakdown* received an Honourable Mention at the 53rd Southern California Journalism Awards in Los Angeles.
His reports and documentaries were broadcast by RSI, the Italian public television service in Switzerland, as well as by RAI and Mediaset. He was currently president of the White House Foreign Correspondents’ Association (WHFCA), an association of correspondents covering US government policy. He was 50 years old.
