Alba is the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2027
One million euro grant to realise the initiatives envisaged in the 'Wind Factories' project Alba 2027 will take shape as Year I of the Langhe Biennial
Alba is the new Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2027. The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, proclaimed the city in the Sala Spadolini of the Ministry of Culture, in the presence of the Jury, presided over by Lorenza Baroncelli, and representatives of the finalist cities, namely Chioggia with the project "Chioggia Porto delle Arti Contemporanee", Foligno - Spoleto with "Foligno-Spoleto in Contemporanea", Pietrasanta with "Essere arte. O dell'umanità dell'arte", Termoli with "Traiettorie contemporanee" and Varese - Gallarate with "Oltre il giardino. Traiettorie armoniche fra arte, industria e paesaggio".
Alba will receive a contribution of one million euros, earmarked for the realisation of the initiatives envisaged in the application file for the "Le fabbriche del vento" project, which won with the following motivation: "The project stands out for its excellent ability to combine territorial regeneration, artistic innovation and widespread participation, through a cultural programme of the highest profile. It is rooted in an avant-garde tradition that over the years has transformed the territory into a creative workshop, projecting itself into the future with initiatives destined to become fixed appointments on the national and international art scene. The integrated plan combines exhibitions, installations and interventions in the urban space and landscape, enhancing emerging talents and activating inter-institutional networks. The widespread dimension transforms the entire territory into an exhibition platform that promotes not only conservation but also experimentation. Particularly relevant are
"With the Capital of Contemporary Art we have, once again, set in motion the energies of the social forces, structures and territories that are eager to emerge, to be noticed or even just to be recognised for their experience and creativity," said the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli. "This initiative," continued the Minister, "is not just a competition, but a tool to encourage all territories to get involved, with their inherited strength through historical stratification. Every identity expresses a profound character, which finds a way to interact in the relationship between man and landscape, according to a canon that is inherited and transmitted. The city receives the title as an open laboratory that has a perspective. You do not receive a prize for your city's career, you receive a prize for what you want to do and give. This is the meaning of this recognition.
Alba's candidacy was promoted by the Municipality of Alba and the Alba Capitale Italiana dell'Arte Contemporanea 2027 Committee, composed of President Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Mayor Alberto Gatto and Nicolas Ballario, who edited the dossier together with a large team. The project will now become a permanent cultural programme, which through the 'Sister Capitals' will be spread throughout the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, an area recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
A widespread and permanent project
The programming of "Alba 2027" will take shape as Year I of the Langhe Biennial, an international event dedicated to the dialogue between art, landscape and community, which will become the permanent legacy of the candidacy. The project will involve Italian and international artists, curators and scholars and will create a network of exhibition spaces, public works and educational projects in dialogue with the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato Unesco territory. The main projects include: the large exhibition dedicated to Pinot Gallizio, the retrospective on Roberto Longhi, the Fondazione Arte CRT's Radis project, Vigne d'Arte, artistic interventions in collaboration with the Alba-Bra Hospital Foundation and the expansion of the Biblioteca Civica G. Ferrero, with a new section dedicated to Luca Beatrice.
