CUPERTINO (CALIFORNIA) - Apple Day. The event dedicated to app developers, never before this year, has catalysed the market's attentions. Because the big star, the one most eagerly awaited, is artificial intelligence. So, with the sun beating down on Cupertino from the early hours of the morning, Silicon Valley was transformed into a mad hive of cars in just a few hours. And on the barren, deserted hillsides of Sunday, the offices of this strip of land that has been dictating the agenda of global innovation for years quickly fill up.

At exactly 10 o'clock, Apple Park in Cupertino is all about Tim Cook. Although the presence in the audience of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, attracts quite a bit of attention. The venue is packed, all the attention is on the stage. For Apple, the artificial intelligence game, which has revitalised Microsoft's stock and pushed Nvidia's beyond imagination, is still to be played out. And for a company that has made innovation its trump card, the argument is irresistible.

And the news is not long in coming. Agreement between Apple and OpenAI to bring ChatGpt to Apple's operating systems.

Artificial intelligence arrives

.

The event is the WWDC, Apple's traditional developer conference during which the biggest news on the software front is unveiled. And again this year, the iPhone manufacturer unveiled new operating systems for all its devices, starting with iOS 18, which will run on Apple's smartphones from next autumn, through to WhatcOS 11 and the (highly anticipated) arrival of a calculator on iPadOS. All topics presented by the head of software, Craig Federighi.

Tim Cook, after the opening greetings, took the stage again to present the most eagerly awaited topic. The classic 'one more thing' in the Steve Jobs manner, usually scheduled at the close of proceedings, when Apple presents the most important innovation: artificial intelligence, in this case.

Powerful, intuitive, integrated, personal and private: this is how Tim Cook presented Apple's 'next big step', namely Apple Intelligence.

How Apple Intelligence Works

.

Craig Federighi explained that the generative models behind Apple Intelligence will be available on iOS, iPadOS and macOS. And the capabilities of this artificial intelligence are multifaceted and intuitive (for example, the user will be able to ask his iPhone if a rescheduled meeting will make him late for a personal engagement).

Context-based notifications: Apple Intelligence will be able to recognise which notifications are important in a given context (whether you are working, on holiday, etc.).

Writing improvements: Apple Intelligence will introduce system-wide proofreading and style improvements on native apps (but also on third-party apps).

Image Generation: Apple's artificial intelligence will be able to create generative photos based on the user's photo library. Three particular styles will be available: Sketch, Illustration and Animation.

Tasking between apps: With Apple Intelligence it will be possible to ask different apps to perform a particular task. Federighi, for instance, asked Apple Intelligence to retrieve files sent by a contact over a certain period of time.

Private Cloud: Technically speaking, Apple Intelligence will exploit cloud-based models using Apple Silicon to ensure that user data remains 'private and secure'. If a request needs to be sent to a cloud server, Apple says it will only send a limited selection of data securely.

Federighi stated that privacy is a top priority for Apple. And many of the Apple Intelligence models will run on the device. For those models that are to be stored in the cloud, Federighi emphasised Apple's ability to allow users to control the type of data stored in the cloud and how it can be accessed.

News on Siri

.

With the arrival of Apple Intelligence, many new features will affect Siri. The virtual assistant will be able to answer "thousands of questions" about how to use your Apple device, it was said during the keynote. But also to perform particular actions, such as sending an article from Apple News to a group thread in Messages. Third-party apps will also be able to take advantage of some of Siri's improvements. The same 'personal context' widely touted by Apple will also come to Siri, allowing it to tap into a wider range of information and data on your device.

The agreement with ChatGPT

.

That ChatGPT had something to do with it, after all, was widely predicted by the rumours, and the first confirmation came with the presence of Sam Altman at Apple Park. During the event, Apple explained ChatGPT is one of the models that can be integrated into its artificial intelligence. The terms of the agreement with OpenAI were not revealed. But the use of the software developed by Sam Altman's company will be free of charge for iPhone owners.

The title

.

During the event, Wall Street showed a certain amount of wait-and-see attitude towards Apple, with the stock which, after a slightly upward pre-market rally, veered into negative territory, losing about one point, and bringing the stock's capitalisation to just under USD 3 trillion. After the announcements, there was no turnaround. The stock lost 1.7%, bringing Apple's market cap below the $3 trillion mark. The most classic of 'buy on the rumours, sell on the news'.
