The last time was in 1996, with a match played on 13 April between Juventus and Sampdoria at the then Stadio Delle Alpi. After almost thirty years, a Serie A match returns in free-to-air. On Tuesday 29 October, at 20.45, the Serie A Enilive match between Fonseca's AC Milan and Conte's Napoli will be broadcast for the first time free-to-air and exclusively on Dazn.

It is an opportunity that is part of the 'try and buy' package of TV rights acquired by the live sports streaming platform for the broadcast of the Serie A football championship until 2029 and that allows it to broadcast a limited number of matches (up to 5 out of 380 matches) free-to-air, per season.

Azzi (Dazn): "Football emotions extended to all"

.

Broadcasting a big match free-to-air for the first time in almost 30 years marks a historic turning point, and even more so if we consider that it will be streamed live exclusively on Dazn without the need to subscribe. It is an extraordinary opportunity that we strongly wanted and that will allow us to bring the emotions of great Italian football to an even greater number of fans,' commented Stefano Azzi, CEO of Dazn in Italy.

The procedures from mobile and smart TV

.

The possibility will be granted up to a maximum of 2 million users. And there will be procedures to follow. From desktop/mobile it will be necessary to go to Dazn.com/home, select Milan-Napoli on the home page and enter one's e-mail in order to watch the match, including all pre-match and post-match entertainment. As for Smart TV access, from 28 October, you will need to access the Dazn app from the TV screen, click on "Watch Free", scan the QR code with your smartphone and enter your email address to watch the match, including all pre and post-match entertainment.

Pre and post-match

The Dazn line-up lined up to narrate the event, says the Access Industries-owned company, "will see Pierluigi Pardo and Andrea Stramaccioni on commentary, along with Diletta Leotta in connection from the pitch from 19:45 for pre-match analysis and interviews at the end of the match. In addition, DAZN Serie A Show will be exceptionally switched on in the post-match with Giorgia Rossi on the presenter together with the coach of the Italian national basketball team, Gianmarco Pozzecco, as super in-studio guests, Massimo Ambrosini and Ciro Ferrara".

The valorisation of the 'Serie A' asset

.

It was precisely the former Napoli and Juventus defender Ciro Ferrara who was on the pitch on 13 April 1996 to play what was the last match played on free to air. Now Serie A is back on free to air, albeit with a different concept: it will have to go through the app and it will be free to air, but through streaming granted by smart TVs. Without smart TVs and an internet connection it will not be possible. The rationale? To proselytise; to make the football product and Dazn known. You have to go through the platform, register. And perhaps - this is certainly Dazn's hope - convince themselves to stay there. Alongside this, one must also consider the benefits that can be derived from increased advertising revenue thanks to open viewing for all.

The mode, as mentioned, was included in the announcement. After all, between expanded Champions League and piracy, keeping up the value of the Serie A asset (which Dazn paid 700 million a year for five seasons until 2029) is becoming increasingly imperative.
