Renault's 'patron' from 2020, Luca de Meo, has left the French car manufacturer and according to press rumours could become general manager of the luxury group Kering, whose CEO, François-Henri Pinault, has decided to split the top management functions.

The news of his farewell to Renault was anticipated by the French newspaper Le Figaro, but was later officially confirmed. After five years at the helm of the automotive group, de Meo has therefore announced his decision to step down and take on new challenges outside the automotive sector.

Renault's board of directors, convened by chairman Jean-Dominique Senard, expressed their gratitude to him for the relaunch and transformation of the Group and agreed that his resignation would take effect on 15 July 2025.

"The board of directors," reads a Renault Group note, "has started the process of appointing a new CEO on the basis of the succession plan already defined and has expressed confidence in the quality and experience of the management team to continue and accelerate the Renault Group's transformation strategy in this new phase.

De Meo: I leave a restored and transformed company

'There comes a time in life when you know the job is done,' said De Meo. 'In the Renault Group, we have taken on immense challenges in less than five years! We have achieved what many thought impossible. Today, the results speak for themselves: they are the best in our history'. "We have,' he continued, 'a strong team and an agile organisation. We also have a strategic plan ready for the next generation of products. That is why I have decided that the time has come to pass the baton. I leave a transformed company, ready for the future, to put my experience in other sectors to good use and embark on new adventures'.

The hypothesis: De Meo at the helm of Kering

.

According to an indiscretion published in Le Figaro, the Italian manager is set to become ceo of the Kering group, a luxury conglomerate to which brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta belong and which is experiencing a difficult time: in 2024 it reported sales down 12% to 17.19 billion, with net profit down 62% to 1.13 billion and ended Q1 2025 with revenues down 14% on the same period the year before, weighed down by the -25% drop in sales recorded by its flagship brand Gucci.

Just in the past few days, again in the transalpine press, rumours had been published about the desire of François-Henri Pinault, ceo and president of the Kering group since 2005, to separate these two posts while retaining only the presidency of the group founded by his father François Pinault, which he himself has led to strengthening on several fronts. But which in the last year has seen a 45% drop in share value (plunged 65% since the beginning of the year).

De Meo would therefore be the first 'outsider' to the Pinault family to hold the position of group CEO. But not the first Italian to have a leading role in the Kering galaxy: Francesca Bellettini, in fact, formerly ceo of Saint Laurent, has been deputy general manager of Kering since September 2023, responsible for the development of the maisons and the coordination of the CEOs of all the maisons. Also in recent months, there have been a number of changes at the top of the Kering group. Both on a managerial level - with Italian Stefano Cantino being ceo of Gucci from 1 January 2025, for example - and on a creative level, with Balenciaga's creative director Demna taking over at the helm of the double-G fashion house.

Kering would not be the first luxury group to choose a top manager with a strong background but not necessarily linked to the high-end segment: Prada did so in 2023 by appointing Andrea Guerra (former Eataly and Luxottica) as CEO; Chanel in 2022 chose as global ceo the Italian-Indian manager Leena Nair, with a 30-year career at the Unilever giant behind her.
