A grave bereavement hits the world of football. Andy Brehme, former Inter defender of record and world champion with Germany in Italia '90, has died at the age of 63. According to reports in the Bild, the probable cause of death was cardiac arrest. Brehme was admitted to the emergency room of a clinic in Munich near his flat. Rescue services, again according to Bild, arrived too late to save his life.
It was Brehme who scored the decisive penalty in the World Cup final in Italia '90 won by the Germans at the Olimpico in Rome against Argentina. With Inter, then led by Trapattoni, he won a championship, an Italian Super Cup and a UEFA Cup in the space of four years.
Brehme partner: 'Died suddenly, respect our privacy'
"It is with deep sadness that I announce on behalf of the family that my partner Andreas Brehme died suddenly and unexpectedly overnight following a cardiac arrest. We ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time and refrain from asking questions."
Dpa received confirmation of Andreas Brehme's death from his partner, Susanne Schaefer.
Brehme, born in Hamburg, played three World Cups, losing the 1986 final in Mexico City to Argentina and was the author, as already mentioned, of Germany's winning goal in the 1990 World Cup final.
