The Californian actor suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
US actor Eric Dane, known to the general public for his role as surgeon Mark Sloan in the television series Grey's Anatomy, has died at the age of 53 from an illness. The news was released by the American media and confirmed by his family, who reported his death on Thursday afternoon, 19 February, at the end of a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon, at the end of a courageous fight against Sla," the family said in a statement quoted by US broadcaster CBS and other media outlets. The actor had gone public with his diagnosis last year, explaining that he suffered from the degenerative neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Born in San Francisco, Dane made his television debut in 1991 with an appearance in the series Saved by the Bell. International success had come in 2006 with his entry into the cast of Grey's Anatomy, where he played the charismatic plastic surgeon nicknamed "McSteamy", a character who remained in the series for over a decade. Dane appeared in a total of 139 episodes until 2021.
