Marjane Satrapi, graphic novelist of 'Persepolis', dead
She told the story of the Revolution in Iran through the eyes of a young girl. Her death one year after that of Mattias Ripa, husband and producer
The French-Iranian artist Marjane Satrapi, who achieved worldwide fame with the comic strip and then the film Persepolis, has died at the age of 56. This was announced by her entourage, according to the newspaper Le Parisien. Marjane Satrapi - reads a statement from her family sent to the Afp agency - has "died of sadness just over a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life". Producer, actor and screenwriter, Mattias Ripa died on 8 April 2025.
Satrapi, cartoonist and illustrator, had been living in France for about 30 years. Several of her comics became famous, but also her films. The adaptation of Persepolis as an animated feature film based on the comic series, recounted in great detail the author's childhood in Iran during the Islamic revolution, and then her exile in Europe. Many scenes and characters were involved in the arrests and executions that followed that uprising and the coming to power of Khomeini. The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
