Totò Schillaci, idol of the Italian national team at the World Cup in Italia '90, has died at the age of 59. The former footballer had been hospitalised in serious condition on 7 September in the pneumology department of the Civico hospital in Palermo. This was announced by the health authority. The bomber of the national team, Juve and Inter Milan seemed to respond to the doctors' treatment in recent days, so much so that bulletins reported a slight but steady improvement. In the last few hours, his condition has worsened.
'With the untimely death of Totò Schillaci, the city mourns the loss of Palermo's most representative footballer in world history. A popularity that, however, never changed Schillaci, who always maintained a kind, humble and helpful soul'. This was stated by the mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagalla. 'For Italy, Schillaci's eyes and goals represented the symbol of the magical nights of the 1990 World Cup, but for Palermo they meant much more, the example of redemption of a son of this city that was going through difficult years. - said - For these reasons, and in agreement with his family, the city administration, in order to pay the right tribute to Schillaci, wanted to make the Stadio Barbera available for the setting up of the funeral chamber, and I thank the Palermo Football Club for the willingness and spirit of cooperation shown. To the family of Totò Schillaci I extend my condolences and my closeness in this moment of deep sorrow'.
