Sardinia's decarbonisation paves the way for gas and new industrial initiatives
The Dpcm approved by the government marks the end of coal and opens the new path to the revival of non-ferrous metallurgy and ceramics
The decarbonisation of Sardinia can begin. And with the new course, new initiatives are also awaited, as the arrival of gas on the island is on the horizon. The go-ahead for this change comes with the signing of the Prime Minister's Decree, proposed by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, the Ministry of Business and Enterprise, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which identifies the priority works and infrastructures for the overcoming of coal in Sardinia. This is a crucial step in the island's decarbonisation path, consistent with the objectives of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).
"The decree envisages a series of strategic interventions, declared to be of public utility and of an urgent nature, for the development of new production capacity from renewable sources and for the installation of energy storage systems," they point out at the Ministry of Business and the Made in Italy Ministry. "In addition, the electricity interconnection system is strengthened, both with the peninsula and with Sicily, along with the strengthening of the transmission network within the island. As far as gas is concerned, a virtual connection is introduced that will guarantee the security of supplies 'thanks to the use of regasification terminals, Floating Storage and Regasification Units (Fsru) and local networks, while ensuring tariff equity at a national level to protect Sardinian consumers'. This measure is particularly awaited by the production world since the relaunch of industrial sectors ranging from metallurgy to ceramics is linked to the presence of gas. with the signing of the Dpcm on methanisation, after close inter-institutional negotiations, Sardinia is finally equipped with the regulatory instrument necessary for the construction of the network infrastructure for the distribution of methane gas, thus putting an end to the dispute opened by the Solinas junta against the State, which has unfortunately heavily penalised our island for too many years," commented Emanuele Cani, Regional Councillor for Industry. "Now we must ensure that the works can be completed in the shortest possible time. The Dpcm will put us in a position to use methane gas, especially for industrial purposes, in the transitional phase towards the right energy transition, guaranteeing a congruous and stable supply in favour of the industrial system, as well as favouring the use of the urban basins already realised for which substantial public resources have been invested". Not only that, the executive also emphasises another 'substantial' element contained in the decree and concerns the 'equalisation of the price of gas, which will finally put Sardinia and Sardinians on an equal footing with the rest of the country'. Also looking positively towards the measure, which aims to 'revolutionise' the island's industrial production framework, is Confindustria, which speaks of an 'important step'.
the measure marks a decisive step in the decarbonisation process, and it is hoped that it will represent an essential step in bridging the competitive gap that currently penalises companies and households due to high energy costs," Confindustria wrote in a note. "The decisive contribution of the regional councillor for industry, Emanuele Cani, should be highlighted, who with commitment and determination has fostered the path that has led to this result, as well as the action taken at government level by Ministers Urso and Pichetto Fratin. For the trade unions, who recall the years of waiting, it is necessary to proceed with the construction of the infrastructure to make methane available on the island.
