In a secret ballot, the Chamber of Deputies approved, by 206 votes in favour and 133 against, the proposal put forward by the majority rapporteur on the Authorisations Committee to refuse the request to obtain the chat records of the MP and former Under-Secretary of State for Justice, Andrea Delmastro, by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

You’ve had Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove in your sights ever since he revealed what you did with Cospito.” So said Galeazzo Bignami, leader of the Fratelli d’Italia group in the Chamber of Deputies, in his explanation of vote on the request for authorisation to use the chat messages implicating the former Under-Secretary of State for Justice, Andrea Delmastro. “Precisely because of what happened to Andrea Delmastro,” added the Fdi representative, “the mafia members said that Andrea Delmastro should be blown up. Ms Schlein, do you see the difference? Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove, for having unwittingly and through no fault of his own met with mafia members who had not yet been definitively convicted and were not actually mafia members, resigned and apologised; whereas his MPs, who went to visit mafia members under the 41 bis regime who had already been convicted, have never apologised, and you have never made them resign. Why don’t you ask for the chat logs from the local councils of Castellammare and Torre Annunziata – which were dissolved due to mafia involvement – and those of Portici and Ercolano, which are under investigation? These are councils for which you campaigned, for which you secured the vote, and through which you helped get Camorra members elected?”

The centre-right applies “double standards, taking a hard line against its opponents whilst being overly protective of its own party colleagues”. This was stated by PD Secretary Elly Schein during her speech in the Chamber of Deputies. “In recent days, you have set a very serious precedent; you have prevented members of the Authorisations Committee from examining the documents,” she added. “We are asking that magistrates and MPs on the Authorisations Committee be allowed to do their jobs; we are not prejudging a trial. We are asking that a trial concerning mafia-related offences not be derailed; this is what we must vote on today.”
