Director Rob Reiner and his wife stabbed to death by their son: what we know
The crime in the Los Angeles mansion. Reiner had directed Stephen King classics such as 'Stand by Me' but also 'When Harry Met Sally'. Trump: 'Died because he was obsessed with me'
He was one of the best at bringing Stephen King novels to the screen. Ironically, he left shrouded in mystery, just like in a work by the Master of Terror. Rob Reiner, 78-year-old director of Stand by Me and Misery Mustn't Die but also of the cult comedy Harry Meet Sally, and his wife Michele Singer, aged 68, were found dead in their mansion in Los Angeles, Brentwood neighbourhood, by their daughter Romy, who lives across the street, with their throats cut. The woman herself, with her testimony, was decisive in the investigation that led to the arrest of her brother Nick, Rob and Michele's second son.
Nick Reiner was arrested and formally charged with the murder of his parents. The man, who is 32 years old, was detained at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. Revoked $4 million bail. Nick, the couple's second son, has a history of drug addiction and lived on the streets years ago. In 2015 he had a co-writing role in the drama Being Charlie, directed by his father and loosely inspired by his personal experiences.
Rob Reiner, wife Michele and son Nick had attended the Conan O'Brien comedian's Christmas party on Saturday and there father and son allegedly had a heated argument. Tmz reported this, citing family sources. Rob and Michele left the party at that point and it is unclear whether Nick also left with them. According to Tmz, Michele had complained to friends in recent months that she and her husband were desperate because Nick continued to use drugs and the two parents no longer knew what to do: 'We tried everything.
Around 4am on Sunday morning, Nick Reiner had checked into a hotel across town from his parents' house, the The Pierside Santa Monica, using his credit card. Some eyewitnesses spoke of the man being 'in shock' as he checked into the motel. Service staff said they found a shower 'full of blood' and a trail leading from his bed, as well as a window covered with sheets.
Thus ends tragically one of the most successful careers in Hollywood of the last fifty years. The son of the famous comedian Carl Reiner, one of the pioneers of television comedy in the 1950s, Rob Reiner followed in his father's footsteps, landing small parts in television programmes in the Sixties. The role that made him famous was that of Michael "Big Head" Stivic, Archie Bunker's liberal son-in-law, in the sitcom Arcibaldo, which started in 1971.
