The doctor, who worked in outpatient clinics between Milan, San Giuliano Milanese and San Donato, was the recipient of two pre-trial detention orders, the last of which was placed under house arrest, on charges of abusing patients on the pretext of visiting them.

After the first arrest following the complaint of an initial patient, the number of cases had risen to four, then to seven between October 2022 and autumn 2023, and finally to nine with further complaints.

The doctor, defined by the gip Cristian Mariani as 'a serial rapist lacking inhibitory restraints', allegedly used 'fraudulent and abrupt methods to overcome the resistance' of his victims, also abusing his profession. Charges to which was also added that of forgery for altering some medical certificates.

The targeted girls had been heard last July under the evidentiary procedure. According to Judge Iannelli, they will have to be compensated with provisional damages of between EUR 20 and 30,000..

He would say he had to visit them for fever or joint pain and under the pretext of groping and abusing them.

The request by the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office Alessia Menegazzo, who, initially together with the Lodi Public Prosecutor's Office, coordinated the investigation by the State Police and Carabinieri of San Giuliano and San Donato Milanese, which led to the first arrest in November 2023 for four cases and a second order of house arrest when other women came forward.

The defence

The doctor had claimed in his defence that he only and exclusively performed manoeuvres to diagnose illnesses reported by the patients or hypothesised by him, but, according to the prosecution, in three cases he even drew up false reports to justify the manner of the examination.

In 2021, involved in another photocopy investigation, he was acquitted in an identical case by producing the medical report.

Ten civil parties defended: nine girls plus the Ats (Health Protection Agency) Milan. Two of them were awarded an immediately enforceable provisional award.

The gup also imposed on the on-call doctor the ancillary penalties of perpetual disqualification from any office pertaining to guardianship, guardianship and support administration, disqualification from public office for five years and 2 years' suspension from the profession.

The investigation started from the account reported by a patient to an anti-violence association in Milan, which advised her to contact the police and file a complaint.

Principario arrested: de Pascale at Piacenza hospital

In the morning, the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Michele de Pascale, visited the Piacenza hospital, which had come under the spotlight following the arrest of Emanuele Michieletti, head of radiology, accused of aggravated sexual violence and persecutory acts against female doctors and nurses.

De Pascale, accompanied by Health Councillor Massimo Fabi and Equal Opportunities Councillor Gessica Allegni, met with Director General Paola Bardasi and some of the ward staff involved in the affair.

De Pascale expressed the closeness and solidarity of the Region and assured the utmost attention and vigilance on the developments of the investigation, reiterating the request to carry out all the necessary verifications to achieve full clarity on the entire situation.

The doctor, who was arrested on Wednesday, is under house arrest. According to police investigators, 'the chief physician performed sexual acts with almost every woman who walked through the door of his office alone'.
