Valdis Dombrovskis rebukes Italy on the accounts. "The Italian budget does not seem to be in line with the recommendations of the EU Council. We have asked to bring in line' the public accounts 'with our recommendations', the Commission vice-president said in a TV interview on Friday morning, also hoping for 'steps forward by Rome on the MES'. For the Parliamentary Budget Office, Italy 'is not fully in line' with the EU, essentially because of the Superbonus.

Then later, in the evening of Friday 19 January, Brussels put a patch on it: 'The Commission's position on the Italian budget remains unchanged. It was a translation error during a TV interview, in which Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis was asked a specific question about the Italian budget plan for 2024. The topic was not proactively raised by the vice president,' underlines an EU Commission spokesperson. "Dombrovskis reiterated the Commission's opinion of 21 November stating that the Dbp is not fully in line with the Council recommendation of 14 July 2023."
