Dow Jones rises above 50,000 points for the first time in its history

The Dow Jones, the historic index of the New York Stock Exchange, crossed the symbolic 50,000-point threshold for the first time in its history on Friday, during a session characterised by a sharp rise on Wall Street.

Around 7.30 PM Gmt, the Dow Jones was up 2.24% to 50,002.61 points.

Like the other US equity indices, it had struggled earlier in the week due to a broad sell-off in technology stocks.

At 10pm Italian time Wall Street closed higher, with the Dow Jones gaining 2.51% to 50,138.31 points. The Nasdaq rose 2.25% to 23,046.96 points and the S&P 500 climbed 1.97% to 6,932.20 points;
