8.8 magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka. Tsunami warning in the Pacific

One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the world hit the far east of Russia in the early hours of Wednesday, with a magnitude of 8.8 causing a tsunami in the North Pacific region. Alarms also went off in Alaska, Hawaii, and all along the Pacific coast as far as New Zealand. Russian areas closest to the epicentre of the earthquake on the Kamchatka Peninsula reported damage and evacuations, but no serious injuries. The earthquake, which occurred at 8.25 a.m. Japanese time, had a preliminary magnitude of 8.0, according to Japanese and US seismologists. The U.S. Geological Survey later upgraded its measurement to magnitude 8.8 and stated that the quake occurred at a depth of 20.7 kilometres. The epicentre of the quake was located about 119 kilometres south-east of the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000, on the Kamchatka peninsula. Several aftershocks of magnitude 6.9 were recorded. The first wave of the tsunami hit the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk, the main settlement of the Russian Kuril Islands in the Pacific. Local governor Valery Limarenko said that the inhabitants are safe and will remain on the high ground until the danger of a new wave is averted. The earthquake caused damage to buildings and cars wobbled in the streets of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, where there were also electricity blackouts and disruptions to mobile phone service. Russian news agencies, citing the regional Ministry of Health, reported that several people sought medical assistance in Kamchatka after the earthquake, but no serious injuries were reported.

The earthquake appears to be the strongest ever recorded in the world since the March 2011 earthquake off the north-east coast of Japan with a magnitude of 9.0, which caused a huge tsunami and caused the 'meltdown' at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Only a few stronger earthquakes have ever been recorded anywhere in the world. The tsunami alert disrupted transport in Japan. Ferries connecting Hokkaido and Aomori, on the northern tip of the Japanese island of Honshu, as well as those connecting Tokyo and neighbouring islands were suspended, and some local railway lines were suspended or delayed. Sendai airport temporarily closed its runway. Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said that no injuries or damage had been reported so far. In response to the tsunami alert, the agency issued an evacuation notice for more than 900,000 residents in 133 municipalities along Japan's Pacific coast, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Japan's nuclear power plants reported no anomalies. Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, which operates the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, said about 4,000 workers had taken refuge on higher ground within the plant complex, monitoring remotely to ensure the safety of the plant. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 50 centimetre tsunami was detected in the port of Ishinomaki in northern Japan.

In the US, cars clogged the streets and highways of Honolulu as the tsunami alert coincided with the Tuesday afternoon rush hour. Sirens sounded as people moved to higher ground. Schools in Hawaii cancelled afternoon and evening activities. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the earthquake generated a tsunami that could cause damage along the coasts of all Hawaiian islands. 'Urgent measures must be taken to protect lives and property,' the alert reads. The Oregon Department of Emergency Management said on Facebook that small tsunami waves were expected along the coast as of 11.40pm local time, ranging in height from 30 to 60 centimetres. It urged people to stay away from beaches, harbours and marinas and to stay in a safe place away from the coast until the alert is lifted. "This is not a major tsunami, but dangerous currents and strong waves could pose a risk to those near the water," he said. Much of the west coast stretching from the Canadian province of British Columbia to Washington State and California is also under tsunami alert. In Alaska, the National Tsunami Warning Centre estimated that wave heights could have reached 91 centimetres in Shemya and 76 centimetres in Adak, which has a population of about 70 and is Alaska's southernmost community. Some waves have probably already hit the remote western islands of Alaska, but they are not expected to reach Cold Bay before 8pm local time.

Philippine authorities warned provinces and cities along the archipelago's east coast of the possibility of tsunami waves of less than 1 metre and advised people to stay away from beaches and coastal areas. "It may not be the biggest waves, but these can continue for hours and expose people swimming in the sea to danger," Teresito Bacolcol of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology told The Associated Press. New Zealand authorities have issued warnings for "strong and unusual currents and unpredictable waves" along coastlines across the country. The government's emergency management agency has urged people to stay away from water, beaches and coastal areas, as well as ports, marinas, rivers and estuaries. New Zealand is about 9,600 kilometres from the epicentre.

According to the local branch of the Geophysical Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the earthquake was the strongest to hit this area of the Kamchatka peninsula since 1952. Scientists said that although the situation was 'under control', there was a risk of aftershocks that could last up to a month and advised against travelling to some coastal areas. In early July, five powerful earthquakes, the strongest of which was magnitude 7.4, struck the sea near Kamchatka. The strongest earthquake had a depth of 20 kilometres and occurred 144 kilometres east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. On 4 November 1952, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Kamchatka caused damage but no casualties.

Waves begin to hit French Polynesia islands

Tsunami waves have started to hit the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, about 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) away from the epicentre of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the far east of Russia. This was stated by local authorities, as reported by CNN. "The highest waves are expected in the next few hours and will be between 1.1 and 2.5 metres high, therefore lower than previous forecasts that spoke of waves of up to 4 metres," the High Commission of the Republic of French Polynesia said on its social channel.

Tourist sites on the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador have been temporarily closed following the violent earthquake in the Russian Far East. This was reported by the Galapagos National Park, cited by CNN. The Ecuadorian government stated on Wednesday that 'there is a high probability that a tsunami will be generated' along the country's coastline. According to the Marine Oceanographic Institute (Inocar), waves could reach a height of up to 1.5 metres.

Earthquake in Kamchatka by typical Pacific mechanism

At the origin of the magnitude 8.6 earthquake in Kamchatka is the typical mechanism of all Pacific earthquakes, including the one in Japan on 11 March 2011. "They are generated by the movement of the Pacific plate, which sinks beneath the continental plate," Alessandro Amato, of the Tsunami Warning Centre of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and president of the UNESCO Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System, tells ANSA.

The region where the Pacific plate sinks beneath the continental plate, notes the United States Geological Survey Usgs, corresponds to the arc called Curili-Kamchatka, which stretches about 2,100 kilometres from the Japanese island of Hokkaido, along the Kuril Islands, and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, until it ends at the intersection with the Aleutian arc south of the Russian Commodore Islands. This movement is responsible for the generation of the Kuril Islands chain, volcanoes along the entire arc and the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. It is estimated that the Pacific plate is moving north-westwards at a speed between 79 millimetres per year recorded near the northern end of the arc, and 83 millimetres per year in the part near Hokkaido. "The fault involved is between 400 and 500 kilometres long along the direction of the coast," Amato further said. "A displacement of many metres of the two fault blocks has also been recorded, and "there have been many repetitions: they delineate the entire fault zone". The tsunami alert was triggered within minutes of the earthquake. "The Ingv had also calculated it. The first waves were recorded in a good part of the North Pacific" and are expected to move southwards later, although it is difficult to imagine how often. 'It is important to understand,' notes Amato, 'that a tsunami is not a wave, but a train of waves that follow one another, and often the first one is not the strongest. For this reason,' he adds, 'constant monitoring of the situation, which evolves progressively and could last for many hours, is necessary'. The first waves, with a height of three metres, reached Papua New Guinea, according to the USGS map. Compared to one of the most violent and destructive tsunamis, the one generated by the 26 December 2004 Sumatra earthquake, the one that occurred today after the Kamchatka earthquake was five times smaller in terms of energy. "The big difference compared to then is that in 2004 there was still no tsunami warning system.

Tourists in Hawaii, 'alarm on mobile phones, then terror'

"We were on tour in the volcanic zone of the Big Island. Towards the end of the tour, as we walked back to the ship, we started receiving emergency signals on our phones: 'If you are in immediate danger, you must move away from the coast and get to higher ground'. Then in bursts another series of messages with indications of when the tsunami would hit. And panic set in'. From the Pacific come the testimonies of the many frightened tourists after the earthquake in Russia and the tsunami warnings in the Pacific, such as that of the Briton Rachael Burrows, who was forced to hurry back to a cruise ship in Hawaii before it sailed to safer waters this morning. Initially,' she told BBC Breakfast, 'the tour guide didn't heed the warning, saying it happened all the time and that 'nothing would happen. We started getting more of them indicating the times when the tsunami would happen'. And suddenly, "they told us to hurry back to the ship to sail to safe waters". "It was quite scary because all the sirens in the area started to sound. Fortunately, we were among the first to board the cruise ship. Then we saw many other people lining up, but they didn't make it. They were told to go to a higher point from the shore and seek shelter".
