It is "Fatal Risks and Choices. Europe at the crossroads" is the title chosen by the Advisory Board for the 20th edition of the Trentino Economics Festival, scheduled from 22 to 25 May 2025, organised for the fourth year running by the 24 Ore Group and Trentino Marketing on behalf of the Autonomous Province of Trento and with the collaboration of the Municipality and University of Trento.
A title that reflects the major changes that the outcome of the US elections will produce on the international chessboard, starting with the global geopolitical and macroeconomic balances. There are numerous risks and choices that we will have to face and that will have an impact on Europe: crucial issues that the Trento Festival of Economics will address with the contribution of the brightest minds in economics, academia and politics at national and international level next May in a special edition celebrating the event's 20th anniversary.
The President of the Advisory Board and Scientific Committee of the Trento Festival of Economics Fabio Tamburini, Director of Il Sole 24 Ore, explains: "The American elections represented a historic turning point, opening up scenarios of great change: the return of the power of States, globalisation that is unlikely to be reaffirmed, the development of international trade that is contracting, squeezed by the increasingly strong polarisation between the United States and China. Europe, between lacklustre economies and a lack of leadership, is increasingly a crock pot between two iron pots. Its future is tied to choices that will have to be made and which are not obvious." Tamburini adds: 'Then looming over these scenarios is the variable artificial intelligence, which not only changes the world as we know it, but also draws attention to the large amount of energy it requires and where to find it. Big changes and unknowns on risks and choices to be made because they will condition the direction in which the world will go'.
With its new title, the Trento Festival of Economics continues its commitment to analysing the challenges dictated by a world scenario characterised by high complexity and uncertainty, proposing solutions and interpretative keys. In 2022, in fact, the theme "After the pandemic, between order and disorder" aimed to explore the profound social, economic and political effects of the pandemic, while the 2023 edition entitled "The future of the future. The challenges of a new world' undertook to outline the impact that major technological and socio-economic transformations will have on humanity. In 2024, with 'Quo vadis? The dilemmas of our time', the Festival analysed the great questions posed by our time, from the escalation of conflicts in the world to the rise of inflation and public debt, from climate change to demographic winter.
The title of the 2025 edition of the Festival was chosen by the Advisory Board of the Trento Festival of Economics composed of Elena Beccalli, Marco Fortis, Paolo Magri, Emma Marcegaglia, Giulio Sapelli, Giulio Tremonti and Fabio Tamburini (president).
