Educational Archipelago kicks off for its seventh year: 71 schools and third-sector organisations are taking part

‘Arcipelago educativo’, the programme devised during the Covid-19 pandemic by Save the Children and the Agnelli Foundation to tackle summer learning loss and educational inequalities, is back for the seventh year running.

In 2026, it will involve 71 schools and third-sector organisations, with the creation of 124 ‘Archipelagos’ across 13 regions and 37 provinces (34 per cent in schools and 66 per cent in non-formal educational settings), involving 7,082 children and teenagers. This represents a 54 per cent increase compared with 2025. Save the Children and the Agnelli Foundation have created a dedicated platform with over 550 resources available for activities at school, at home and at educational centres; a free methodological handbook is also available to teachers, educators and volunteers.

According to Daniele Timarco, director of national programmes at Save the Children, “summer learning loss must be recognised as a priority for education policy and tackled through structural measures and sustained investment”. According to Barbara Romano, a researcher at the Agnelli Foundation, “pilot schemes help us understand what works in a project and measure its effectiveness, so that replicable models can then be made available to the educational community. And that is precisely what has happened with Arcipelago Educativo”.
