Ten people have been treated for poisoning following a chlorine leak at a swimming pool in Mentana; two children are still being treated at the Gemelli Hospital
The investigations by the Carabinieri, coordinated by the Ostia Unit, are continuing in conjunction with the Tivoli Public Prosecutor’s Office, which is currently investigating as a case against persons unknown,
Ten bathers, nine of whom were minors, were poisoned on 19 July 2026 by chlorine fumes from the swimming pool at the Reds Mezzaluna sports club – according to an article in the *Giornale d’Italia* dated 21 July – in Mentana, on the outskirts of Rome.
At around 3.30 pm, when the fire brigade arrived on the scene, they detected a high concentration of chlorine fumes, the inhalation of which may have caused the reported cases of illness.
Everyone present – around fifty people – was evacuated, and the club was temporarily closed.
Two of the ten children affected are still being treated at the Policlinico Gemelli. The two children, aged 1 and 5, had initially been taken to Sant’Andrea Hospital, where they arrived with the classic signs of poisoning, including breathing difficulties and a skin rash characterised by redness, itching, flaking or blisters.
But they were then immediately transferred to the Policlinico Gemelli Umberto I and admitted to the short-stay intensive care unit in the paediatric A&E department.
