Key points
They took the initiative and together went to Rome, to the Viminale, where they met the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, to represent, with a unified position, 'the strong concern of the Vicenza economic system with regard to the persistent lack of personnel in the police force'.
The situation
The president of Confindustria Vicenza Barbara Beltrame Giacomello, the president of Confartigianato Imprese Vicenza Gianluca Cavion, and the president of Confcommercio Vicenza Nicola Piccolo, representing the three employers' associations - among the most relevant at national level in their respective sectors in terms of number of member companies and economic weight - highlighted how the current situation is generating 'concrete repercussions both on the quality of life of citizens and on the ability of companies to operate in an adequately protected context'.
Numerous thefts have been reported in the province: the presence of a goldsmith district with around 700 companies, at a time when prices for the precious metal are at their highest, is a further element of complexity. The meeting was also attended by Forza Italia group leader Maurizio Gasparri, senator Pierantonio Zanettin and regional councillor Jacopo Maltauro.
What caused alarm was the level of preparedness of the latest actions, in which the thieves acted despite the presence of state-of-the-art video surveillance systems: in addition to the thefts, what remains is the damage, the cost of repairs, and the resulting slowdown in production.
The Territory
During the confrontation, 'a note of convinced appreciation was expressed,' reads a joint note, 'for the work of the police force, which daily guarantees protection, professionalism and a sense of the State even in complex organisational conditions. Precisely because of the esteem and trust that the territory and the economic categories place in these women and men, the need was reaffirmed for the allocation of personnel to be parameterized to the delicacy of the Vicenza context: a province that contributes significantly to the economic development of Italia and that, due to its extension, production density, attractiveness, presence of military bases, strategic infrastructure sites for the whole of Italia, and relative exposure to crime phenomena, requires levels of protection consistent with real needs'.
