End of life, the bill is back on track and the possibility of using an intramoenia doctor has arisen
Forza Italia is working on some changes in an extreme attempt at mediation with the centre-left. An amendment is being studied to involve 'the general practitioner' who can also do so intramoenia and in a public hospital, provided there is 'voluntary and free' service
The stop-and-go on the end-of-life bill continues in the Senate. Having defined the date of 3 June for the start of examination in the Chamber - apparently a step forward, claimed by the oppositions a week ago - now the majority is opening up to new amendments. A novelty desired by Forza Italia, which is not by chance working on some changes in an extreme attempt at mediation with the centre-left, especially on the role of the National Health Service. Among the amendments on which Forza Italia is working is the hypothesis of 'relying on the voluntary and free nature of the general practitioner' who can practice end-of-life treatment 'also in intramoenia'. In short, an attempt to overcome the Fdi's rejection of the principle that end-of-life treatment can be a service provided by the SSN and at the same time open up to the centre-left, which instead envisages it, even in Bazoli's text, expressly citing "the support and control of the National Health Service".
The 3 June deadline
Ia lengthening of the timeframe and thus a postponement with respect to the 3 June 'finish line' is inevitable. With the risk of never arriving at the approval of a law, as the opposition sniffs and fears. Next step, on 26 May, when the Justice and Social Affairs committees should indicate the deadline for submitting amendments. It is expected to be at least a week or ten days later. That is to say, close to 3 June, when the centre-right could ask for more time to conclude the examination of the text in the meantime corrected, thus cornering the minority bill that bears the name of Alfredo Bazoli of the PD. The law that would define medically assisted suicide for the first time in Italy has been in the Senate since 2024, but the road remains uphill. Hence the need for a confrontation on the issue between government allies. The majority group leaders, the rapporteurs of the centre-right proposal (Zullo and Zanettin), the chairmen of the committees and, for the government, Minister Ciriani and Deputy Minister of Justice, Sisto, met this afternoon at Palazzo Madama. Pushing for the meeting, and for pushing the ddl forward, is FI. It could be the leader of the Azzurra group, Stefania Craxi, who will present the new amendments, as she is a member of the Justice Commission. The Bazoli ddl on track
