End of the third heatwave in Italia: cool air from Norway and thunderstorms on the way

The third heatwave to hit Italia over the past week is drawing to a close. Whilst temperatures in central and northern Italy began to fall between Sunday and Monday, between today and tomorrow it will be the turn of central Italy – with the exception of Rome, where temperatures are still reaching 35 degrees – before the cooling trend spreads to the southern regions between Thursday and Friday.

“The forecasts tell us that these days mark the tail end of this summer’s third heatwave, although some hot spots remain,” Lorenzo Tedici, a meteorologist at iLMeteo.it, explains to Adnkronos - The south will continue to experience high temperatures throughout tomorrow and into part of Thursday, with highs of 37, or even 40, degrees. Then, from Thursday evening, the cool air from Norway – which is already making itself felt in the north – will also reach the southern regions, bringing a drop in temperatures in line with the seasonal average.”

A breath of fresh air that will also bring thunderstorms and hailstorms.

“Over the past few hours,” explains Tedici, “the weather has affected the north and the Marche, and the Civil Protection Agency has issued a warning, particularly for the north-east and the Adriatic coast, Marche, Abruzzo as far as Molise, with a few localised showers in Puglia. Then, between Thursday and Friday, the thunderstorms will also reach the south.” But this will only be a ten-day respite.

“The models indicate a further gradual rise in temperatures as early as 30–31 July,” he continues - “It is therefore likely that as early as the first weekend of August, the 1st and 2nd, we will be in a phase of an African high-pressure system with a fourth heatwave which, however, currently appears to be slightly less intense than the third and second ones we have already experienced.”
