Energy, EU: 'It's a fossil crisis, we must focus on transition and renewables'
Union ministers gathered on the Mediterranean island to respond to the oil (and other) emergency after the war in Iran
"We are facing a very serious situation, the energy crisis in the Middle East puts Europe under pressure. It is an energy crisis but it is more correct to say that it is a fossil energy crisis. That is why we have to continue our transition from fossil fuels and intensify our efforts to improve energy efficiency and to replace a larger share of fossil fuels with renewable energies'. This was said by the EU Energy Commissioner, Dan Jorgensen, on arrival at the ongoing informal Energy Council in Cyprus.
"I understand that some Member States find themselves, in the short term, in a situation where they have to subsidise certain industries or help vulnerable citizens. This is legitimate. However, we are convinced that these measures must be targeted and must be temporary," Jorgensen continued, emphasising that the "best thing we can do for our citizens and industries is to make incentives as attractive as possible to encourage them to move away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy".
The Commissioner also anticipated that he would present the 'catalogue of good practices and ideas on how toreduce consumption and demand' presented to ministers in recent weeks.
