Energy: sources close to P. Chigi say the windfall tax must be co-ordinated at EU level
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Italia “continues to press ahead with determination on its initiative regarding the levy on windfall profits in the energy sector, promoting discussion of the issue at European level”. This has been emphasised by sources at Palazzo Chigi, with the aim of “clarifying a misunderstanding regarding the method: the European Commission has not been ‘consulted’ for an opinion or binding authorisation on this specific point, nor is this a case of censure or rejection of Italy’s positions”. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, “coordinated action at European level is the only means of ensuring fairness and competitive neutrality: by requiring all oil and energy companies operating within the EU single market to contribute equally, we avoid creating commercial discrimination and protect the competitiveness of the national industrial system”.
