Veterinary pension, Enpav presents the first sustainability report
The document will be presented at the annual assembly on 18 April
The veterinary doctor profession is transforming and the representation of the female gender is growing. In 2025, among the new members of Enpav, the national welfare and assistance organisation for veterinary doctors, women accounted for 72% compared to 28% of men. In total, there are 25,900 self-employed veterinarians (58% of whom are women), a number that is decreasing compared to previous years (26,600 in 2024, 27,300 in 2023). Contraction that has several reasons, from the closed number in universities to more flexible and discontinuous careers than in the past.
The Sustainability Report
This is what emerges from Enpav's first Sustainability Report, which will be presented on Saturday 18 April during the Annual General Meeting. The objective is to report in an organic, concrete and structured manner the choices and results achieved, according to a rigorous methodological framework consistent with international standards. The document highlights a trend that is consolidating over time and that brings with it new requirements in terms of the reconciliation between professional and personal life, career paths and protection tools.
Integrated Welfare
Over time, Enpav has developed and strengthened an integrated welfare system to respond to the needs of the category in an increasingly targeted manner; in 2025 the total investment in welfare amounted to EUR 10,742,129.47, an increase of 30.5% compared to the previous year. Many of the initiatives financed relate to business start-up: young members, for example, benefit from contribution subsidies and initiatives dedicated to the development of skills and integration into the labour market. Three of these are worth mentioning:
- the post-graduate scholarships for advanced training courses, such as master's degrees, specialisation schools or internship and residency programmes carried out in Italia;
- the youth work grant, through which Enpav offers young graduates the opportunity to carry out six-month training experiences at centres of excellence in Italia or experienced professionals, thanks to the Talents Meet Excellence programme (71 in 2023, 79 in 2024, 95 in 2025).
Other interventions were designed to provide support for situations of personal and family fragility, with the aim of ensuring a more inclusive and effective protection system. These include:
- the work grant welfare support, an economic contribution designed for invalidity pensioners in conditions of socio-economic hardship, which allows them to carry out a work/training activity in public or private facilities with special agreements for a period of between 4 and 6 months, with the aim of promoting work integration and social integration;
- the subsidy to parenting, an economic subsidy designed to support female professionals in the phase of return to work after maternity leave, granted to reimburse expenses related to childcare services, such as crèches, baby-sitting and summer centres (120 subsidies were granted in 2023, 141 in 2024, 163 in 2025).
"The scenario before us," says Enpav President Oscar Enrico Gandola, "requires a social security and welfare system capable of adapting to new and more complex needs, accompanying professionals throughout their working lives. Among the challenges highlighted by our sustainability report is precisely the sustainability of the social security system in the long term, which is an absolute priority, especially in a context of demographic change and the increasing complexity of professional careers. Ensuring the balance between contributions paid and benefits provided requires careful management choices and a constant ability to adapt'.
