Environment, Brescia is the most sustainable city Back to the South
One third of the parameters change, in the macro-area 'Environment and services', but both at the top and at the bottom the positions remain fairly stable. Starting with the first, Brescia, and the last, Reggio Calabria, which are the same as 12 months ago.
Bergamo also remains on the podium, confirming third place, while Treviso climbs to second. Only three entries in the top ten, with Vicenza (fourth), Siena (seventh) and Mantova (tenth) replacing Milano, Pordenone and Como. Siena flanks Macerata increasing the representation of the Centre. Otherwise, again, the prevalence of the North is clear and the South lags behind, with the exceptions - in the first half of the ranking - of Oristano (28th), Cagliari (38th), Lecce (39th), Nuoro (46th) and Bari (51st). Puglia's capital is the southern metropolitan area with the best ranking, compared to 94th place for Catania, 101st for Naples and 105th for Palermo. In absolute terms, among large areas, Bologna does best of all with sixth place.
As for Reggio Calabria, there is a clear detachment from the penultimate one (Caserta) and this result contributes sharply to the Strait province's black jersey in Quality of Life. Significantly, only with reference to the "new entry" on the healthiness of the air - where Ancona stands out ahead of many southerners, and where the North collapses, with Turin last - Reggio is placed in the first half of the ranking, while collecting placings among the last ten in nine indicators.
Moving to the top positions, Brescia remains in the lead thanks to a consistent overall average of placings, to which we can add the first place ex aequo for sustainable public lighting (100% of LED lighting points in the municipality is recorded in 12 cities) and the sixth for the density of photovoltaic installations, where it is affirmed Padova ahead of Treviso, which is first in waste separation. The Marca Trevigiana, second in the overall ranking, boasts a higher number of appearances in the top ten than Brescia, but 'pays' for a few poor placings, such as 95th place for public lighting and 82nd for flood risk.
They go respectively to Lecco, Gorizia and Bolzano, then, the gold medals for liveability with regard to the age groups of children, young people and the elderly (see 'Il Sole 24 Ore' of 26 May). Last year, on the occasion of Quality of Life, the three rankings were grouped into one index, while this time they have retained their autonomy.
