Carlo Comporti elected to ESMA. Giorgetti: ‘A recognition for Italia and the Government’

During a meeting of the ambassadors of the 27 Member States, the EU Council has selected the Italian Carlo Comporti as its candidate for the presidency of ESMA, the European Securities and Markets Authority. This selection does not constitute final approval but must be confirmed by the European Parliament. Comporti was chosen over the Danish candidate Karen Dortea Abelskov. Both are members of the ESMA Board.

“Comporti has been elected to ESMA; we’ve won – I’ve been working on this for four months.” The Minister for the Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti emerged from the Chamber of Deputies, where he had entered shortly before to hold a brief question time, to announce the news to reporters just before the official statement was issued. “Although the process is not yet complete, today’s decisive vote is a recognition of both the individual and Italia,” said the Minister for the Economy, adding that “ESMA plays a strategic role and is set to grow in the future as the European Consob. “I am pleased with today’s outcome, which is the result of the working method we have adopted since the start of this parliamentary term and confirms the renewed credibility of our country and the government in Europe.”
