The Etna alert level has been lowered from red to orange: normal operations have resumed at Catania airport
Flights to and from Catania Airport have resumed from 2.00 pm.
Sac, the company managing Catania Airport, has announced that, “following the downgrading of the volcanic activity alert level from red to orange, sectors C1 and B3 of the airport have been reopened”. Flight operations for departures and arrivals at Catania Airport have resumed from 2.00 pm.
36 per cent of flights cancelled; the most severe crisis in the last 20 years
Between 6 August and 12 August, 1,974 flights were scheduled to depart from Catania Airport, but ‘36 per cent were cancelled as a result of the developing situation and the necessary operational restrictions. The figures confirm the exceptional scale of the emergency, the most severe in the last 20 years in terms of its impact on airport infrastructure.” This was announced by SAC, the company managing Catania and Comiso airports, in a statement.
