ETS: Commission presents reform, resources earmarked for decarbonisation
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - The European Commission has presented the long-awaited reform of the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The proposal aims to strike a balance between the demands made by certain industrial sectors and the desire to preserve the framework of the scheme, which was introduced twenty years ago as a cornerstone of the EU’s climate policy. Among the key changes is the requirement to allocate the revenue generated by the ETS to funding the decarbonisation of the economy. ““We want the ETS to become a tool capable of supporting investment, in line with the EU’s objectives on climate, competitiveness and energy independence,” explained the European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, at a meeting with a group of European newspapers, including *Il Sole 24 Ore*.
