ETwinning 2025 data: Italian school accelerates internationalisation
Figures from the recent report by the Erasmus+ National Agency INDIRE show record growth in enrolments (+70%) and new projects (+26%)
The eTwinning community confirms itself as one of the main drivers of educational innovation and distance cooperation in Europe. Born in 2005 on the initiative of the European Commission, today integrated in the Erasmus+ Programme 2021-2027 and part of the European School Education Platform (ESEP), the platform is experiencing an extraordinary expansion phase in Italia.
A record-breaking 2025: leap forward for members and projects
While on a continental level the community has exceeded 1.2 million teachers involved in 46 countries since 2005, it is the acceleration of the trend in Italia over the past year that is the main finding.
New teachers registered: a leap of +70%. Over the past year, more than 11,000 Italian school teachers have chosen to join the community. This boost brings the historical total of Italian registered teachers to over 133,000 since 2005.
New projects activated
New projects activated: +26% growth. During 2025, 3,700 new e-twinning projects were launched. The historical tally of collaborations involving Italian schools thus rises to 48,700 projects (with Spain, France, Greece and Turkey topping the list of partners' preferences).
Certificates of Quality: eTwinning Teaching Excellence Grows
The comparison with the previous year also rewards the pedagogical quality and methodological care of Italian projects, measured by Quality Label standards: INDIRE - National Institute for Documentation, Innovation and Educational Research - With 100 years of history, it is the oldest research institute of the Ministry of Education. The Institute is the point of reference for educational research. It is engaged in the promotion of innovation processes in schools: developing new didactic models, experimenting the use of new technologies in educational pathways, redefining the relationship between spaces and times of learning and teaching. In addition, INDIRE is the Italian Agency of the Erasmus+ programme for the School, University and Adult Education spheres.
National Quality Certificates on the rise (+8%): The projects that have obtained the prestigious national recognition have risen from 1,256 in 2024 to 1,358 in 2025.
European Quality Certificates: awards issued at the central European level stood at 560. This figure normalises after the extraordinary and transitory peak in 2024 (922 certificates) and the 709 in 2023.
