The approval in the EU Council of the EU Due Diligence Directive, which was intended to introduce corporate liability for violations of workers' rights, the environment and human rights, also with regard to suppliers, has been scrapped. The final compromise text was submitted to Coreper for approval by the ambassadors of the 27, says the Belgian EU Council presidency, but lacked the necessary qualified majority. The situation will now be reconsidered. Decisive was the position of Italy, which, according to diplomatic sources, abstained.
In today's Coreper in Brussels 'the necessary qualified majority was not found' to approve the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (Csddd), announces the Belgian presidency. "We must now assess the state of affairs and we will see if it is possible to address the concerns raised by the member states, in consultation with the Parliament," he adds.
A difficult climate accompanied the text, which now ends up on a dead end without finishing its journey in time for the European elections, scheduled for 6 to 9 June. The measure is too divisive before a political consultation, especially for Germany where the parties of the ruling coalition are at odds on the issue.
