Gas: EU says storage levels are lower than in the past, but there is no risk to supplies
At 65 per cent, against a final target of 80 per cent
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “Despite gas storage levels being lower than in previous years, the Member States and the Commission believe that there is no immediate risk to the security of gas supply in the EU.” This is stated in an EU press release issued following the meeting of the Gas Coordination Group held this afternoon. It is noted that “although the situation on global energy markets remains exceptional and requires close monitoring, it differs significantly from that of 2021/2022. At present, the EU is better prepared, thanks to greater diversification, increased LNG import capacity and reduced demand for gas’. As regards winter preparedness (storage), it is added that “the EU is on track to achieve an adequate level of winter preparedness. In the current circumstances, the Commission sees no reason to intervene. The gas system is sufficiently resilient to cope with lower storage levels for the coming winter’. Brussels has recently indicated that reserves stand at 65 per cent: this is considered manageable, even though it is lower than in previous years. The target of 80 per cent must be achieved.
