Hungary has requested the lifting of immunity for MEP Ilaria Salis. This was announced by Viktor Orban's Hungarian MEPs during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The confirmation also came from Salis herself.
In a note, the Avs MEP said: 'The request to waive my immunity by the Hungarian authorities will soon be announced at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It is no coincidence that the transmission of the request to the Parliament took place on 10 October, the day after my speech in the plenary on the Hungarian presidency, when I harshly criticised Orban's actions. Evidently, tyrants have a hard time digesting criticism'.
"As I have already said several times, I hope that Parliament will choose to defend the rule of law and human rights, without giving in to the arrogance of an 'illiberal democracy' in autocratic drift, which, through the mouths of its own rulers as well, has already declared me guilty on several occasions before the verdict," Salis remarks. At stake is not only my personal future, but also and above all what we want Europe to be, which is increasingly threatened by authoritarian political forces. The minimum conditions are not in place for a fair trial to take place in Hungary. Neither for me, nor for Maja, nor for any political opponent, least of all an anti-fascist. We have already shown what solidarity can do. It is time to mobilise again, in the name of anti-fascism, democracy and true justice.
