Europe is marching in no particular order on the road to ecological transition: plug-in cars account for a very large share in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium, with growth, albeit slow, continuing.

In other countries, however, particularly Italy and Spain, electric cars still account for marginal market shares. "Italy,' emphasises Massimiliano Abriola, director of the Arval Mobility Observatory, 'suffers from a significant gap with our competitor countries in terms of the penetration of alternative fuels, particularly pure electric mobility. There is, however, a very strong awareness among companies, with a real commitment to becoming agents of change, thanks to an awareness of their obligations to contribute to a more sustainable economy. All this is also confirmed by the requests made by company personnel on the subject of mobility, to ensure that there is real support for a redefinition of car policies and the selection of vehicles on car lists'.

According to the Arval mobility observatory's 2024 Corporate Fleet and Mobility Barometer, 60 per cent of companies have a specific strategy or targets with respect to reducing the environmental impact of mobility. It is from this data that one must start to motivate the push for the adoption of environmentally friendly vehicles.

Two out of three companies are, or will be within the next two years, required to publish a sustainability report, and for more than 80% of them, corporate mobility plays an important role. All this translates into the increasing inclusion of alternative fuel vehicles in company fleets: 63% of companies already have at least one hybrid or electric vehicle in their fleet and 87% will have one within the next 3 years.

At European level these percentages are slightly lower, i.e. the share of fleet managers who say they already have a hybrid or electric vehicle in their fleet comes to 59% and the share of those who will adopt it in the next three years to 77%. The forecasts of Italian fleet managers and their European colleagues regarding the composition of the fleet in three years' time highlight, in the face of a prevalence of endothermic engines, significant differences as regards hybrids (22% in Italy and 20% at continental level), but at the same time similar evaluations on the weight of plug-in and Bev, which together will reach a share of 33% in Italy and 32% in Europe.
