On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2024, more than 51 million citizens went to vote for the election of the76 members of the European Parliament due to Italy. These were the tenth European Parliament elections.
It must be remembered, however, that candidates proclaimed elected in several constituencies must declare to the national electoral office, within eight days of their last proclamation, which constituency they choose. If they fail to do so, the national electoral office shall proceed by drawing lots. The president of the national electoral office shall then proclaim elected by subrogation the candidate immediately following the last elected candidate on the list from the constituency that was not chosen or drawn. The names of the elected candidates shall be brought to the knowledge of the public by the national electoral office by publication in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic.
Fratelli di Italia (Ecr) led by Giorgia Meloni is on its way to winning 25 seats in the Eurocamera, almost five times as many as the five elected in 2019. She thus becomes the largest Italian delegation and ousts from the podium theLeague, which in 2019 was the most represented Italian party in the Euro Chamber with 28 MEPs and has now instead dropped to fifth position with 8 seats. The Democratic Party strengthened to 21 elected from 19 in 2019. The M5s was significantly downsized, dropping to 8 seats from 14 in 2019, even though the outgoing Five Star delegation had already been reduced to 5 representatives after a number of leaks. Exploit of the Greens/Left Alliance, which won 6 seats, and had none in 2019 (the line-up in the groups between Verts/Ale and The Left has yet to be defined).
