European Athletics Championships: Tamberi wins gold in the high jump, Sioli takes bronze
The Milanese athlete, who had been flawless up to 2.27, had to pull out after his first attempt at 2.30 due to a muscle strain. Fausto Desalu also won a medal, taking bronze in the 200 metres
Gianmarco Tamberi has won gold in the high jump at the European Championships in Birmingham, whilst Matteo Sioli took bronze. The athlete from the Marche region cleared 2.32 on his second attempt, two centimetres higher than the Ukrainian Oleh Doroshchuk, who took silver. The Milanese athlete, who had cleared 2.27 without any problems, withdrew after his first attempt at 2.30 due to a muscle strain.
Fausto Desalu also won a medal, taking bronze in the 200 metres. The Italian finished third following a photo finish with a time of 20.26 seconds. The other Italian, Filippo Dezza, came seventh, with the gold going to Germany’s Owen Ansah.
“This medal is the crowning glory of my long career. I’ve been in the national team since 2014 and have competed in three Olympic Games, from Rio to Paris.” So said Fausto Desalu, speaking to Rai, after winning bronze in the 200 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. “I was always in the mix,” he continued, “but I’ve finally won this medal. It’s not the most prestigious medal, but to me it’s as good as gold. This medal is the answer to those who said that Italian sprinting had taken a step backwards. We’ve already said it all.”
