Almost five thousand students have applied to vote as out-of-town students in Milan for the European elections on 8 and 9 June. For the first time, in fact, university students will be able to go to the polls in their municipality of residence, and in Milan they will be able to do so at special polling stations set up at the Università Cattolica and the Politecnico, expressing their preferences for the lists and candidates from their home district.
Spaces to be set up
.In an email addressed to the rectors of the Milanese universities, Statale, Bocconi, Iulm, Cattolica, Bicocca and Politecnico, Hunimed and Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, the Milan City Council invited them to be part of the organisation of the electoral machine by making available for the European elections the very locations where students pursue their education.
For a question of suitability of space, the Administration will set up three sections for District 4 (South) and one for District 1 (North-West Italy) at the Università Cattolica. At the Politecnico di Milano there will be two sections for Constituency 3 (Central Italy), one for Constituency 2 (North East Italy) and two for Constituency 5 (Islands).
Participants
.A total of 4,979 out-of-town students applied to vote in Milan, the majority of whom came from the southern (1965) and central (1066) regions, followed by the Islands (995), the North-Eastern (807) and North-Western (146) constituencies.
The new voting method, introduced on an experimental basis by Article 1-ter of Decree Law 7/2024, converted into Law 38/2024, will allow students domiciled for a period of at least three months in a municipality outside their region of residence to vote in the municipality where they live temporarily.
